Brief biography of Nik Kantaputra

Professor Piranit Nik Kantaputra is the director of Center of Excellence in Medical Ge- netics Research, Chiang Mai University and a faculty of the Division of Pediatric Den- tistry, Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand. He graduated with Doctor of Dental Surgery from Chiang Mai University in 1986 and obtained Certificate and Master of Science in Pedi-
atric Dentistry from the University of Minnesota, USA in 1990. He had a fellowship train- ing in Clinical Dysmorphology with Prof. Robert J. Gorlin at the University of Minnesota during 1990-1991. His major research interest is finding the causes of rare craniofacial malformation syndromes, especially when teeth are involved. Recently his research team has identified the genes responsible for the smallest teeth and the biggest teeth in the world. Prof. Kantaputra has identified more than 13 new genetic syndromes, pub- lished more than 74 international publications, and 3 book chapters. Dr. Kantaputra is an editorial board members of American Journal of Medical Genetics and Journal of Human Genetics.

Oleksii Tymofieiev

Alexey Tymofieiev was born in February in 1951. He graduated from the dental department of Bogomolets Kiev Medical Institute with honors in 1973.
His Candidate's thesis (Ph.D.) is "Early Diagnostics and Treatment of Acute Odontological Inflammatory Diseases of Jaws" (1982), the thesis for a Doctor's Medical Science degree ­"Diagnostics, Treatment and Preventive Maintenance of Acute Inflammatory Diseases of Soft Tissue" (1988).
 
In 1990 he received a dozent certificate and in 1992 - a professor certificate at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery. A Member of the European and International Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the President of the Ukrainian Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons and Dental Surgeons.
 
From 1973 to 1975 he worked as a pathologist at the Research Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. From 1975 to 1977, he served in the Armed Forces of the USSR as a chief medical officer. From 1977 to 1979, he was a dentist surgeon at a city dental clinic (Kyiv). From 1979 to 1983, he worked as an intern doctor at the maxillofacial department of Clinical Hospitals № 24 and № 12 in Kyiv.
 
Since 1983 up to the present, he works at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of the P.L.Shupyk National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education (assistant, dozent, professor, Chief of the Department since 1990).
 
Since 1998, he is currently a chief of the Department of Operative Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery at Kiev Medical University UAFM and a chief of the Maxillofacial Surgery Centre.
 
In 1995, he was elected as an academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, and in 2009 – as a full member (academician) of the Academy of Medical and Technical Sciences of the Russian Federation.

Professor Tymofieiev is one of the most well-known in Ukraine and outside scientists, teachers and maxillofacial surgeons. Surgical interventions he spends residents of Ukraine and patients from countries near and far abroad. Long time he develops and improves such directions in maxillofacial surgery:
 
- Remove the parotid tumors (transactions are conducted on the facial nerve), and submandibular salivary glands;
- Treatment of the nontumor-like diseases in major salivary glands;
- Removal of the tumors and tumor-like formations in jaws, soft tissues of face and neck;
- Treatment of post-traumatic tissue damages in maxillofacial area and their complications;
- Treatment of inflammatory diseases of the jaw and soft tissues;
- Implantation in the maxillofacial area (jaw bones, gels, etc.);
- Dental implants and complications associated with these operations;
- Surgery for diseases of the peripheral parts of the face and neck nerves (operations on peripheral branches of the trigeminal nerve);
- Surgery of congenital and acquired deformities of jaws and soft tissues;
- Plastic and aesthetic surgery, and others;
- Galvanic pathology (galvanism and galvanoz), which is associated with the presence of metallic impurities (non-removable dentures), oral cavity, and complications associated with it.
 
He was appointed an Honorary Member of the Research Council of the American Biographical Institute (AB1). In England he was given a DDG (International Biographical Centre, Cambridge), in the USA – DG (American Biographical Institute). At the International Biographical Centre (England, Cambridge) he was appointed a consultant on maxillofacial surgery. He is a Honoured Science and Technique Worker of Ukraine (2003). The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine awarded "Petro Mogyla" Medal (2008), and the President of Ukraine – "For Merits "  III degree Order (2008) – to him. He is a Man of the Year – 2009 (according to the AB1, USA). In 2010, he was awarded the Letter of Commendation of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
 
For many years he has been an expert at the Head Office of Forensic Medical Examination and the main authority of  the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. Tymofieiev is a colonel of medical service in the reserve.
